_THE BRIEF
A man sets out to make his own movie and runs into trouble at every turn: friendships under strain, a relationship tested, and actors and production pulling in different directions. He learns from all of it, finishes the film and gets it to its premiere. The score had to be funny without turning the story into a joke, and sincere without slowing the comedy down.
The whole score is about balance between the comedy and the heart. Romanian-style folk writing, on acoustic guitar and pizzicato strings, carries the comedic moments with a playful, slightly off-kilter energy. When the story turns sad or encouraging, the score switches to orchestra, so the audience knows it is allowed to feel something. The switch between the two sounds does the storytelling.
